Share2day Foundation and Foundation RataPlan join forces with a special summer promotion, in which 30 bicycles will be donated to disadvantaged youngsters in the coming weeks. Together with the Food Bank young people are chosen. The first 17 bikes were transferred on Thursday 18 July.
Bicycle gives freedom
The idea of donating bicycles to young people in disadvantaged situations comes from the Share2day Foundation. This Alkmaar foundation is committed to young people in difficult situations and works together with the Food Bank for this. Having a bicycle, so obvious to many, turned out to be impossible for dozens of young people in our city: this was due to the difficult financial situation of the parents. While a bicycle is an essential means of transport for school-going youngsters: it gives freedom, involvement with the class and with friends and more practical benefits.
Share2day approached the Foundation for this RataPlan. RataPlan aims to create employment for people at a distance from the labor market. We do this by selling second-hand goods, including bicycles. Together we came up with a plan to make 30 bicycles available each year, with Share2day taking care of the out-of-pocket costs and RataPlan ensures proper functioning bicycles including a one-year maintenance / warranty.
We have a better life than ever in the Netherlands, but almost 1 million people, of which 100.000 children, still live below the poverty line. This issue is also a given in our municipality. Share2day and RataPlan are therefore very happy that they can contribute a little to improving the daily living conditions of disadvantaged young people in Alkmaar. "There is a lot of hidden poverty, there is still a taboo on it," said Vincent van de Vrede from Share2day. “We think that certainly young people deserve to grow up with equal opportunities, that's why we started this campaign. We are very happy with the cooperation with RataPlan! "
