Creation of RataPlan
RataPlan was established on 29 March 1982. At that moment the foundation still had the name Stichting Kringloopwinkel. The aim is to counter the enormous waste of raw materials and energy in society and the associated pollution of the environment. In addition, the goal is also to make people aware of this waste and pollution. The foundation wants to achieve this through people-friendly and environmentally-friendly work. There are only volunteers working at that moment.
In March 1983, a year after the founding of the foundation, the thrift store opened its doors on the Weststraat in Den Helder. In addition, there was a peeling project. Peelings were collected in the Visbuurt and van Galenbuurt in Den Helder. These peelings were brought to a farmer in Huisduinen.
The name RataPlan
On 2 May 1984 the name was changed to Stichting Kringloopwinkel RataPlan. The name derives from a saying in North Holland; "Take the whole rataplan with you". This means the whole trade. The foundation also has a new objective; Activating, stimulating and setting up projects aimed at satisfying the needs of the unemployed and also aimed at a possible return to the regular labour market.
RataPlan bought for one gulden a store on the Geulstraat at the end of 1986. Unfortunately, this building is destroyed by arson so RataPlan was forced to look for a different location. This was found at Weststraat 71 and on 25 January 1988 the store was opened.
The foundation at the time also started a four-year collaboration with the day activity center. There are then eighteen volunteers and two job pool employees, long-term unemployed who return to work via a lending contract, working at RataPlan. Because the cooperation with the day activity center had to end, RataPlan was looking for a new home. This was found in the Amerstraat and on 1992 January 4 the thrift store was opened. Sales are rising and RataPlan donates the profit to good causes. In 1993 RataPlan extended with two adjacent buildings.
In 1996 RataPlan is having a partnership with the employment office Noorderkwartier. The municipality of Den Helder is also connected to this project. The thrift store then moved once more. On 26 June 1999 RataPlan Den Helder opens the doors of the new store at the Nijverheidsweg 3a. The former building of moving company Kiesewetter has been transformed into a modern and well-arranged thrift shop. RataPlan is sometimes called the 'Bijenkorf among the thrift shops'. 40 people are working at that moment at RataPlan.
In 2006 RataPlan goes over the border of Den Helder. The first extension is a fact. A new store is opened in Heerhugowaard and in Schagen a small thrift store is opened in the center. After two years, RataPlan Schagen is moving to a larger accommodation at Korte Fok. After this, various thrift stores were added and more and more were expanded towards the Randstad.
In 2007 RataPlan starts a collaboration with the Dutch Railways. Together with the NS RataPlan bicycle parking facilities where, among other things, bicycles are for sale and where repairs are carried out. Thanks to this collaboration, the number of jobs inside RataPlan is growing .
Meanwhile RataPlan has 24 thrift stores and 48 bicycle sheds. We have grown from a 'few' employees to more than 1200 employees! Our ambition is to offer paid work to 2025 in 2000. These are 200 jobs per year. We continue to innovate, but the objective remains the same as in 1982; an independent, non-profit foundation, which offers work to people with a distance to the labour market and promotes reuse.
